H.M.H.S Salta had been requisitioned for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 10 April 1917 she was returning to France to collect more wounded service personnel, when she struck a mine laid by the German U-boat UC-26. The terrible damage caused the ship to sink within 10 minutes, 130 lives were lost, including crew, medics and nurses. The patrol boat HMS P-26 which had been escorting Salta tried to assist by pulling alongside, but she also struck a mine and sank.
